10 ChatGPT prompts to make AI your free career coach
AI can write your resume, suggest professional certifications and develop a pathway to help you achieve your career goals for free.
Quick backstory: In 2022, I had a 4k / month side hustle creating resumes and cover letters, career coaching, and developed a whole course around professional development for career changers. The first time I used ChatGPT, I realized my business model as is was years, if not months from dying.
Before I share these prompts, I would like to put on a caveat. As of this writing, ChatGPT and similar platforms are imperfect. I suggest that anyone using these prompts double-check the responses with a professional. As the saying goes, always talk to your doctor.
For best results, do these in order:
Prompt 1: “Here are my top 3 interests, core values, andskills. Based on this combination, what are five career paths that align with my lifestyle goals and offer purpose and growth? Also, explain how each path connects to what I’ve shared.”
Prompt 2: After identifying the most interesting career path, “I am interested in X career path; what give me five job titles that are common in this industry and a short description of each.”
Prompt 3: Pick the most compelling job and upload your resume and the job description of interest: “Here’s my resume and a job I’m targeting. Based on this match, what are the five most relevant transferable skills I bring to this role? For each, explain how it would appear in this position and where it’s evident on my resume.”
Prompt 4: “Extract the top 10 skills listed or implied in this job description. Then help me identify which ones I already possess (based on my resume or background), and flag the ones I might need to strengthen or position more clearly.” Then copy and paste them at the top of your resume (if you possess them).
Prompt 5: “Revise the bullet points in my resume to align strongly with this specific role. Focus on the impact, metrics, and keywords mentioned in the job description. Where possible, quantify outcomes and tailor language to this industry.” This won’t be perfect, so go in and fine-tune it.
Prompt 6: “Using my resume and the job description, write a personalized and compelling cover letter highlighting my fit, passion, and value-add for this specific role. Ensure it reflects the company’s mission and my career narrative.”
Prompt 7: “Using my cover letter as context, write a concise, professional message I can send to a recruiter or hiring manager on LinkedIn or via email. Make it engaging, confident, and tailored—highlighting my enthusiasm, value, and interest in connecting.”
Prompt 8: “Let’s simulate a mock interview for this role. Start by asking a behavioral or role-specific question. After I respond, please provide me with targeted feedback on clarity, structure, confidence, and relevance. Continue with progressively harder questions to stretch my prep.”
Prompt 9: “Write a sincere and tailored thank you message I can send post-interview. It should reinforce my enthusiasm for the role, recap a highlight from our conversation, and restate the unique value I would bring to their team.”
Prompt 10: “If I land this position, what could a bold but achievable 2–4 year professional growth plan look like within this field? Include potential promotions, skills I should develop, lateral opportunities, and ways to expand my leadership and impact?”
