The One Question That Could Save Your Job Interview. Episode 10

In this episode I address two listener questions around networking and moving past the first round in a job interview.

Takeaways:

Question 1: How can I network without being awkward?

  1. Provide value first: Instead of asking for a job outright, offer something valuable, such as a free service or a coffee meeting that you pay for to build a connection. Give, then ask.

  2. Find common ground: Use warm introductions through mutual connections (e.g., via LinkedIn) to make networking less cold and more comfortable.

  3. Be clear about your goals: Clearly articulate your skills, desired role, and industry to make it easier for others to help you, avoiding vague requests like “any job openings?”

Question 2: Why am I not getting past first-round interviews?

  1. Do your research: Thoroughly understand the company’s operations, clients, and goals before the interview to show preparedness.

  2. Solve their problem: Clearly articulate how your skills address the company’s specific needs, aligning your experience with the job’s requirements.

  3. Nail the elevator pitch: You can prepare a concise 60-90-second summary of your professional background, skills, and how they align with the role, while avoiding any personal details.

  4. Build rapport early: When asked “How are you?”, share a brief, personable response (e.g., weekend plans) to create a connection with the interviewer.

  5. Ask thoughtful questions: End the interview by asking, “Is there anything you’d like me to expand on?” to show openness and invite further discussion.

  6. Send a follow-up: Write a brief thank-you email or, if possible, a handwritten note to leave a lasting impression.
